New York School for the Deaf

Founded in 1817, the New York School for the Deaf (NYSD) is the second oldest school for the deaf in the United States. It is a private non-profit organization operated in cooperation with the New York State Education Department.

Challenges faced

  • Delayed Processes. NYSD’s processes were inefficient and slow, which caused frustration for the staff.

  • Poor process visibility. The admins could not identify where an approval request was stuck and what caused approval delays.

  • High operational costs. Since NYSD used paper documents for their processes, the cost of printing was high, and documents occupied a lot of valuable storage space.

Solution

The New York School for the Deaf faced approval delays, which slowed their processes. The approvals were manually processed using paper and Google forms and were dependent on employee schedules. They brought in Kissflow, a low-code/no-code platform to digitally transform their operations and eliminate inefficiency.

Lorraine Gold-Appel, an ASL Interpreter and Kissflow Administrator at the New York School for the Deaf, said Kissflow has been instrumental in automating all the manual workflows and completing 75,000+ requests.

She mentioned that Kissflow’s simple yet powerful low-code/no-code capabilities helped three departments achieve operational efficiency – Business Office, HR, and Student Support. Some of the key operations that Kissflow streamlined were:

  • Business Office: Invoice Approvals, Purchase Orders, Travel Reimbursement

  • HR: Cancer Screening Time Off, Employee Onboarding/Off-boarding, Request for Service Animal

  • Student Support: Admission Application, Student Incident Report, IEP Amendment Request
