Agentic automation is the use of AI agents alongside deterministic automation to run business processes that are too complex or too variable for rules alone. Gartner frames the shift as moving automation from doing to thinking, extending it to complex and cognitive tasks.
Two strategic planning assumptions in the report matter more than any single profile, and one of them should change how enterprises think about where automation lives.
Gartner's first strategic planning assumption is that by 2030, 60 percent of organizations will adopt platforms for AI agent orchestration from vendors outside of their existing systems of record providers.
Read that carefully. Gartner is predicting that most enterprises will not get agent orchestration from the vendor that supplies their ERP or CRM. The orchestration layer will sit somewhere else.
That is a structural claim about where value accrues. Systems of record hold the data. Orchestration coordinates work across systems, agents, and people, which is a different job with different requirements. Gartner's second assumption reinforces the governance dimension: by 2030, 40 percent of enterprises deploying agentic automation will minimize regulatory and compliance risk using process intelligence.
Gartner also notes that the 2026 CIO and Technology Executive Survey showed AI, integration, and automation receiving some of the largest year-on-year funding increases.

Theme one is where Gartner puts the difficulty, and it is worth sitting with. The hard part of agentic automation is not building an agent. It is coordinating agents, systems, and people through a process where accountability is still traceable.

Gartner's definition here has been updated for the agentic era. A no-code platform is a development technology for business technologists or citizen developers to create business solutions, including AI agents, without interacting with code.
The peak is the point of maximum attention immediately before the Trough of Disillusionment. It signals expectations running ahead of typical results, which is a reason to buy carefully rather than a reason to wait.
Gartner's obstacles for the profile explain why. It says inconsistent governance and misuse have given no-code a reputation for fragile implementations, and that platforms adopted without IT oversight become redundant point solutions. It adds that as adoption reaches complex scenarios, deeper technical expertise and IT involvement become necessary to manage operational risk.
Those obstacles get sharper when agents are involved. A fragile form is a nuisance. A fragile agent acting on systems is an incident.
Gartner's process intelligence prediction points at the underlying issue. Enterprises will need to demonstrate what an agent did, why, and under whose authority.
That is difficult when the logic driving an agent is not readable after the fact. Approval workflows and review boards help, and they sit outside the thing being governed.
